A large number of studies have shown that moderate alcohol intake can reduce the risk of heart disease and blood vessels in men and women. Drinking alcohol in moderation means one drink a day for women and 1-2 for men, says Donald Novey, MD, an integrative medicine physician with the Medical Group lawyer in Park Ridge, Illinois. "The difference in the amounts is because of the way men and women metabolize alcohol," explains Dr. Novey.
"When you say one drink, and drink the size of those issues," Novey adds. According to the US Department of Agriculture, one drink is equal to:
12 ounces of beer or
5 ounces of wine or
1½ ounces of spirits (hard liquor such as gin or whiskey, 80 proof)
And the risks of excessive drinking
Unfortunately, some people can not stop at one drink or just two. And too much alcohol can lead to serious health consequences. Drinking too much alcohol can also raise blood pressure and damage to the heart, and is linked to many different types of cancer, including mouth, esophagus, breast, prostate, colon and rectum. Only the biggest health risks even for those who drink, but also smokes.
The consequences of excessive drinking can be not only for serious alcoholic, but also to their friends, family, and even innocent bystanders. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and more than 16,000 people die each year in car involving drunk drivers accidents. Other data indicate that one out of three violent crimes involving the use of alcohol and at least three out of four incidents of violence against the spouse involving alcohol. "Alcohol is a depressant. It makes people sad over time, is not happy," says Novey. When depressed, people can do some things but unfortunate for themselves and their families.
